Capturing Two Icons: A Primrose Yellow V12 and a British Racing Green 4.2 Jaguar E-Type
There are moments in automotive photography when a car does more than simply stand in front of the lens, it reshapes the entire atmosphere around it. Recently, I had an unplanned opportunity to photograph two extraordinary classic Jaguars: a Primrose Yellow Jaguar E-Type V12 convertible with a rich brown interior, and a British Racing Green 4.2 E-Type, every bit as timeless as its reputation suggests.
Even though this shoot happened on the fly, both cars immediately reminded me why the Jaguar E-Type remains one of the most captivating classics to photograph.
The Primrose Yellow V12 E-Type: Smooth, Refined, and Visually Striking
The E-Type V12 has a presence that feels effortlessly refined. The later V12 models carry a smoothness that sets them apart, quieter, more mature and incredibly composed on the eye. The Primrose Yellow exterior, paired with the warm brown interior, creates a colour combination that’s rarely seen today but deeply rewarding to capture through the lens.
Even in midday lighting, which is far from ideal for showcasing the E-Type’s sculpted lines, the car carried itself with confidence. Its long bonnet and subtle curves still found ways to catch the light, hinting at how beautifully it would photograph in golden hour conditions.
The British Racing Green 4.2 E-Type: Classic Proportion and Raw Character
Beside it sat the British Racing Green Jaguar E-Type 4.2, a car that embodies the early spirit of the model: purposeful, athletic, and wonderfully pure in its design. British Racing Green has always been synonymous with Jaguar’s heritage, and it remains one of the most photogenic colours on an E-Type’s form.
Even under harsh midday sun, the deep green finish and chrome accents offered glimpses of what could be achieved with a fully planned shoot. Rich shadows, crisp reflections and the kind of depth that only comes with controlled lighting and intentional positioning.
Why Midday Light Doesn’t Do These Cars Justice
While I’m grateful for the opportunity to photograph these cars at all, the midday sun is notoriously challenging for classic car photography. It tends to flatten the curves, mute the paintwork, and reduce the depth and tonal richness that make cars like the E-Type so visually iconic.
Golden hour light, early morning or late afternoon, transforms these shapes completely. It brings out the subtle transitions along the bonnet, enhances the curvature of the rear haunches, and allows the chrome to glow instead of glare. With more time and dedicated planning, both the V12 and the 4.2 E-Type would reveal far more of their character and craftsmanship.

This impromptu shoot reaffirmed something that always stays with me: cars of this calibre deserve intentional, well-crafted photography. The Jaguar E-Type, whether V12 or 4.2, benefits immensely from a dedicated session that highlights its heritage, design, and individuality.
