8 Accords, 1 Decade: The Ultimate 90s Rollout

Sunday morning rolled around and I fancied a trip to Top Secret cafe for a BMW event/meet up. I managed to find a few old school ‘Beemer's’ that really caught my attention which will follow in a blog soon after this one. However, it was this group of awesome 90’s JDM, 8 Honda Accords to be precise that really got my juices flowing! Lets take a look…

The 1990’s Honda Accord

...The 1990s Honda Accord. Seriously, hear me out. Back then, Honda was in its absolute prime, completely over-engineering everything they touched. We’re talking about a golden era led by the classic 4th-gen (the CB7) and 5th-gen (the CD5) bodies. What made these things so special on the street wasn't just how bulletproof they were, it was the fact that Honda blessed these family sedans with a front and rear independent double-wishbone suspension. That's a high-end setup usually saved for proper sports cars, and it's exactly why these Accords handle like an absolute dream when you drop them.

Under the hood, most of these rolled out of the factory with a rock-solid 2.2-liter F-series four-cylinder engine (F22A or F22B), making a modest 125 to 145 horsepower. It was plenty for getting groceries, but the real magic happens when you look at how the car community modifies them today. Because the stock engines lack that aggressive VTEC scream, this crew of eight had some legendary blueprints on display:

  • The H22 Engine Swap: This is the holy grail for an Accord. You pull the high-revving, twin-cam VTEC H22A motor straight out of a Prelude or a Japanese-market Accord SiR, drop it in, and instantly bump the car up to a fierce 200+ horsepower.

  • The "G23" Frankenstein Build: A genius budget mod where you take a tough F23 Accord engine block and bolt on a high-flowing H22 VTEC head. You get the torque of the Accord block with the top-end scream of VTEC.

  • Stance & Suspension: Thanks to that awesome double-wishbone setup, tossing on a set of coilovers lets these big sedans sit incredibly low and track completely flat through corners, all while tucking some seriously aggressive 90s wheels.

  • JDM Styling: The aesthetic is all about tracking down rare, period-correct parts from Japan. Think original Stanley flush-mount fog lights, Mugen lips, and those classic amber corner lights.

Seeing eight of these clean, era-correct builds sitting together in one place completely stole the show.

Old School Cool

There really is nothing better than old-school 90s cars. I had my own little romance once upon a time with a 1992 MK2 Golf GTi in Capri Green (we actually shared the same birth year!). My gosh, that thing was awesome. I had a friend's garage do all the tuning and modification, and to this day, it drove better than almost any car I’ve ever owned. Cars from the 90s were just built different. They have the perfect amount of refinement for daily use, but they're still manual and rugged enough to give you that raw, unfiltered driver's buzz.

Whenever I am at a car meet here in Thailand, it’s always the 70s, 80s, and 90s classics that completely wake me up. I seem to fall more in love with these older builds each time I study them. Admittedly, I hadn’t had much experience with older Hondas and especially Accords, so spending the morning photographing these guys really made my day.

In fact, it got me thinking... how much does a clean 1992 Honda Accord Coupe even go for these days? (If anyone knows of a clean one tracking around Thailand, let me know!)

A massive thank you as always to the owners for being so incredibly helpful, welcoming, and kind. Here are the images from the day. I hope you enjoy looking through them as much as I enjoyed shooting them.

Arran!
